I have worked as a freelance community artist since graduating in 2000, delivering arts projects in a variety of settings, from galleries and museums to more predominately community based settings. I aim to encourage disengaged young people on the fringes of dangerous or risky behaviour, or young people who would not normally engage with the arts to develop their creative skills and participate in the arts.
In 2006, I was captivated by a Channel 4 program featuring Room 13—a school enterprise that had a democratically run studio featuring a professional artist working in the space. This innovative model, fostering a studio environment for creative exchange, resonated deeply with me and changed my approach to working with young people. I no longer saw myself as a teacher, but as a facilitator. It has been a journey of mutual learning and occasional challenge.

The notion that learning thrives within the realms of process, idea development, and collaborative dialogue was not just intuitive—it was essential. If I, as an artist, flourish in a studio environment then why not extend the same opportunity to the young people I work with? I have noticed how using this approach has instilled a sense of independence, a passion for co-learning, and a shift both thinking and behaving.
Within this studio-based pedagogy the young people I work with aren't just students; they're co-creators, collaborators, and catalysts for growth. Through our interactions, I find myself not just imparting knowledge, but also learning profoundly from the groups I work with.

Tate Pop Up Studio

Tate St Ives
2015
Managed and facilitated an experimental pop up studio on the highstreet with Tate St Ives. Temporarily taking over a disused tea room, creating an ‘open studio space’ for 15–25 year olds. The project posed the question: without a huge marketing campaign, would young people turn up? Report here - www.phf.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/Circuit-Test-Risk-Change_2019.pdf
